Work/Meme coin site

The object died. The picture stayed.

SAVE is the site for a meme coin about the floppy disk, the object that disappeared while its picture stayed on every save button. It is a working Windows desktop where the only thing that works is Save. A custom site for a client: we designed and built the brand and the site.

The idea

Press it. Don't check.

Everyone still saves their work by pressing a picture of a disk they have never held. The brief was to make that idea something you could use rather than read about, so we built the machine it came from and left one verb working.

A desktop where the only thing that works is the one thing everyone still uses.

What we built
01 · The boot

It starts like a machine.

The site boots from drive A, with a BIOS screen, a drive light and a sound. It plays once per visit and steps aside.

SAVE
A BIOS boot screen reading Non-System disk or disk error
02 · Nothing works

Every program refuses.

Icons can be dragged and stay where you leave them, but they don't open. Every program answers with the same message: nothing on this computer works except Save.

SAVE
An error dialog on the SAVE desktop reading This program cannot be run
03 · The disk

A ledger that survives.

The floppy holds a real 1.44MB. Its Properties count visits, bytes written and erased, and those counts survive a format.

SAVE
The 3.5 inch floppy Properties dialog with visit and byte counts
04 · The thesis

A document that cannot be saved.

The argument opens in a Notepad window marked read only, the one file on the machine you can't keep.

SAVE
The SAVE thesis in a read-only Notepad window
What it does
  1. 01

    Save actually saves

Ctrl+S writes to the floppy, and what you type in Notepad is still there when you come back.

  2. 02

    Copy a disk

Copy Disk hands you a link to your disk, which opens write protected for whoever you send it to.

  3. 03

    Built by hand

Two static pages with hand-plotted cursors and icons, an animated wallpaper and no framework.

We work on a limited number of projects at a time, staying closely involved from the first review through the relaunch.
